  • During his three years there (1896-1899) there, he studied piano and voice, took courses in practical music theory and composition at thw Richard Schmidt Conservatory, as well as musicology at the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin with Oscar Fleischer, Heinrich Bellermann, and Max Friedlander. Komitas came to Berlin in 1896 at the age of 27 without any knowledge of German to study at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (today Humbold University)

Komitas matriculated at the university where he took a number of courses and was enrolled until 1899. He lived in Charlottenburg district, near the Lietzensee. The importance of his stay in Berlin for his musical development lay in the fact that a new musical world opened up to him. Through his teachers Prof. Richard Schmidt and Oskar Fleisher he came to know a number of other musicologists.

When Oskar Fleischer (1856-1933) established the International Music Society, Komitas became the first non-European member of that society. Komitas was highly appreciated in these circles and gave a number of voice and piano concerts.
